description: Few topics seem more appealing than studying the biological basis of interacting minds. Unfortunately, brains and bodies under neural observation are usually not allowed to move. This tends to put narrow constraints on the phenomena that are studied in social cognitive neuroscience, leaving the neural basis of joint action largely unexplored. Although behavioural research does not have this excuse, the study of joint action has only recently started to gain wider attention. We shall give an overview of some research in this area that we find particularly innovative, in addition to presenting a few studies we have done. Our review will span research on mimicry, synchronization, joint attention, task sharing, and symbol genesis. We hope that neuroscientists will feel challenged to come up with ways of studying such “real” social phenomena even though their machines are built for “stand-still”.
